Tower Salting

Deposition of inorganic salts in the main fractionator towers of Fluid Catalytic Cracking units (FCCs), Cokers and Crude Units (CDU) is a common cause of operating problems and lost profits. Composed primarily of ammonium chloride, these salt deposits tend to form and deposit in the mid-to-upper sections of the main column pump around exchangers. If not removed, salts can accumulate and cause a number of significant problems that affect optimal tower operation and the rest of the process unit.

Tower Salting in Crude and Vacuum Distillation Units

The DISPERS-ALL™ Ammonium Salt Dispersant Program is the Nalco Water solution to help mitigate the effects of ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) salt deposition in the top of FCC main fractionators, coker combination towers or CDU atmospheric towers.

When applied to an already fouled tower, the chemical is used to disperse and remove the deposits, thus cleaning the system to remove the immediate process bottleneck without the need to reduce unit feed rates or bring the unit down for cleaning. The salt dispersant can then be applied to the clean system on a continuous basis to prevent the further accumulation of these deposits.
