C4 Stabilization

Mixed C4 streams produced in ethylene crackers can contain anywhere from 30 to 80 percent of 1-3 butadiene. During storage and transportation of these streams, butadiene may react to form polymers, which can foul flow meters and transferring pipelines. In addition, polyperoxides may also build up while in storage, causing an explosion risk. Our FortisT mix C4 stabilizer chemical programs are designed to mitigate these risks.

Preventing Polymerization and Fouling in Mixed C4 Streams

The industry standard practice for mixed C4 stabilization is the use of TBC. However, TBC is a severe skin irritant that does not inhibit polymer formation. Nalco Water provides less toxic, yet more effective stabilizers for reactive streams that are stored and shipped, like mixed C4. We also provide best-in-class soluble polymer monitoring techniques to track program performance.

*Nalco Water makes no warranties with respect to crystalline polymers, including but not limited to popcorn polymer and other crystalline polymers as well as polybutadiene peroxides. Customer is solely responsible for controlling oxygen ingress as well as identifying and remediating any stagnant areas or piping segment that are open to the process but that do not have flow through it “e.g. dead-legs.” Customer is solely responsible for complying with applicable laws and protocols for the safe handling, transportation, and storage of butadiene/Crude C4 as described in the Butadiene Product Stewardship Guidance Manual published by the American Chemistry Council.
